Opera previews local AI for websites and extensions
WebAI runs on the user’s computer; Opera offers experimental extensions to illustrate its uses.
Opera’s announcement describes an optional early preview. Enabling WebAI in Settings downloads a model; it can be switched off. Supported computers are 64-bit Intel/AMD Windows PCs and Apple-silicon Macs, excluding Intel Macs, Linux and Windows on Arm. Response speed depends on hardware. The example extensions are experiments, not built-in Opera features.
Got It? offers a concrete reading task: it creates a short quiz about the current article. Opera Software says the answers are in that page and that both article and responses stay on the device. It requires local AI to be enabled. As a possible first check, compare each generated question and answer with the passage it concerns; this is an editorial suggestion, not a reported test.
Project Lens addresses a different reading need. Describe your project once, and the extension colors article paragraphs according to their relevance to it, according to its developer. Built-in AI must be enabled here too. For a bounded trial, you could describe a research topic and compare the highlighted passages with your own selection. That proposed comparison would assess usefulness for your project, without assuming the colors are correct.
TechCrunch reported the announcement.
