Gemini Notebook or Perplexity: chosen documents or an open web question?

The starting material matters. A practical comparison of the documented workflows, their overlap, and one small question you can use to explore the difference.

Do you already have the material you want to understand, or do you need to find it? That is a useful starting point for choosing a research workflow.

When the reading pack comes first

In Gemini Notebook, Google's source-based chat lets you select which notebook materials to use and open citations in context. A defined reading pack is therefore a sensible starting point for comparing what those documents say.

It also finds web or Drive sources, with results you can review and import. The difference is how you organize the evidence; web research is part of this product too.

When you still need to find the material

Perplexity describes its search workflow as interpreting a question, searching online and producing an answer with numbered source links. This makes it a useful starting point for discovering relevant pages. The response is a synthesis of retrieved material, rather than an exhaustive reading list.

Perplexity also accepts uploaded files. Its documentation says short files can be analyzed in full, while long files yield relevant extracts. Uploading a report therefore does not establish that every passage was considered.

Access matters in the other direction too: Google's web import guidance excludes paywalled pages and imports an HTML page's text, not embedded media or linked pages.

Try the same small question

For a hypothetical exercise, choose two public camera manuals. Ask: “Can each camera charge over USB while recording? Show the supporting passage for each model.”

In the notebook, select only those manuals as sources.

In Perplexity, start by asking it to find the manufacturer's manuals, then ask the same question.

Compare the models and passages cited. If web search finds a newer manual, decide whether to add it to the reading pack before repeating the question. Different source sets can explain different answers; this exercise does not measure overall accuracy.
