IBM updates Granite Switch without replacing its base model

Granite Switch 4.1.1 updates speech recognition and its Decision adapter. IBM describes the patch as compatible with 4.1, without migration.

IBM says the update changes specialized components while leaving the base model untouched. Adapters add particular capabilities to that underlying model; users compose the updated components they want and deploy them. The release announcement also describes tutorials and an Adapter SDK as work in progress, intended to help developers build their own adapters. It does not present that toolkit as already available.

For transcription, the TurboCTC model card lists English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Japanese. It says the model produces punctuation and capitalization alongside the words. Its Transformers example loads a processor and model, converts sample audio to the processor’s sampling rate, prepares the inputs, generates output and decodes transcripts. The documented requirement is Transformers 5.16.0 or later. These are IBM’s documented instructions and capabilities; we have not tested transcription quality.

The Decision adapter documentation describes a different task: selecting among supplied options. It takes a state, such as a ticket, conversation or document represented as text or JSON, plus a question with a fixed option set. It returns an option and probabilities across the choices. The documentation lists variants for Granite 4.1-8B and 4.1-30B and recommends Mellea for calling adapters. That recommendation describes an integration route, rather than a prerequisite imposed on every implementation.
