Your first local AI trial: choose a model and check the result
Use Ollama or LM Studio for a bounded local-model trial. Separate downloaded models from cloud services, check hardware support and compare outputs against known answers.

Decide where the request will run
A desktop interface alone does not establish where inference happens. Ollama's cloud documentation distinguishes requests sent to its hosted service from local models. Record the model and endpoint before adding documents. This is a trial, not a performance comparison.
Prepare the model before disconnecting
For an offline route, LM Studio documents that downloaded models can run without internet. Model discovery, downloads and runtime updates need connectivity. Obtain the required files first, then try the task offline. Exclude optional integrations; their behaviour is a separate question.
Check the actual machine
Read the runtime's hardware support list for your operating system, GPU and drivers. A model announcement or a new AI workstation does not establish that a particular model will fit or run comfortably on your laptop. Record the variant, memory and software versions before buying hardware.
Judge a result you can verify
Use task-specific checks. Invented note: “The design review is on Tuesday; the release date is undecided.” Ask for both dates; the latter should remain unknown. Record invented details and correction time. Passing this small test does not establish general reliability.
