Work inside an existing project

Cursor Agent can search a codebase, edit files and run terminal commands. That makes it relevant when the answer requires a change to a project rather than a code snippet copied from a chat.

Who should consider it?

Consider it for an unfamiliar repository, a reproducible bug or a small feature with clear acceptance criteria. Our suggested starting point is a task you already know how to check, so you can judge the proposed changes.

A useful first task

Ask: “Find where this form validates email addresses. Explain the current behavior, then propose a fix for blank input. Keep unrelated files unchanged.” Supply the failing input and the expected message. Review the explanation before requesting an edit.

What to check

Check which commands the agent may run and inspect the changed files. Compare the result against your example, including the failure case. Keep a separate version-control checkpoint before a larger task.
