Choose an AI tool by the task, not the headline

A practical way to turn a vague goal into a small, testable shortlist without chasing every new launch.

Two tools turn the same verified specifications into drafts that are judged by corrections and usable output.

You need three short product descriptions from a supplier's specification sheet. That is a better starting point for choosing an AI tool than “Which assistant is best?” The right shortlist depends on the input, the finished format and the work left after generation.

Turn the job into an acceptance brief

For this proposed exercise, use invented product data: desk lamp; USB-C input; cable included; brightness not stated. Ask for three concise descriptions for a shop. Every version must preserve the supplied facts, and none may invent brightness, battery life or a certification.

Your brief should also say where the result goes. Text to paste into a shop is different from a spreadsheet with one product per row, or a finished image containing readable text. Choose only tools whose official documentation covers the required input and export. If a necessary connector, file type or output is unavailable in your account, remove that option before comparing prose quality.

Use the same sample and judge the whole task

Give two or three eligible tools the same data and request. A useful sample output is: “A desk lamp with USB-C input. The cable is included.” It stays brief because brightness was never supplied. Treat this as an illustrative answer, not a measured result.

Check each description against the source. Can you copy or export it into the destination? Does revising the tone preserve the specifications? Record corrections and the time to reach a usable result, including your review. Anthropic's evaluation guidance supports using task-specific criteria and difficult cases; here, the missing brightness is a deliberate difficult case.

Make a decision you can explain

Keep a simple record: tool and mode | facts added or lost | editing needed | usable export | actual cost of the completed trial. A result that invents a specification fails this assignment even if it reads beautifully. If both pass, choose by the editing and delivery work you actually observed.

Before using real customer or confidential material, check whether that input may be shared under your organization's rules and the service's terms. Repeat the comparison when the task changes—for example, from writing descriptions to generating product images. This exercise narrows a specific choice; it does not produce a permanent ranking of AI tools.
